How do I get selected to participate in The West Select?(back to top)

The selection process is handled by Phoenix Art Museum's Curator of American and Western American art, Jerry Smith. If you are interested in being considered for The 2012 West Select, please contact Jerry Smith at Jerry.Smith@phxart.org.

How does The West Select Sale work? (back to top)

The West Select Sale is a fixed price auction. Each work of art in the Sale has a set price. All prices are listed on the Price Sheet which is handed out on the evening of the Sale. Upon registration, you will receive an “Intent to Purchase” booklet containing intent to purchase slips which are stamped with your individual buyer number on them. This buyer number will also be on your Name Badge. If you are interested in purchasing a work of art, simply fill-out an intent-to-purchase slip and hand it to the MAC volunteer who will be standing adjacent to the work of art. You may submit only ONE intent slip per work of art.

The “Intent to Purchase” period will begin at 6pm and will be signified with a loud horn. The intent period will last for 1 hour (until 7pm) and will conclude with another loud horn. At 7pm, two names will be drawn from each box and will be posted as the #1 and #2 buyers for the works of art. Buyer #1 has 20 minutes to purchase th artwork via check, payable to MAC, or by credit card. At 7:20pm, another horn will blow, if Buyer #1 has not purchased the work of art yet, Buyer #2 will now have the opportunity to purchase.

This method not only proves exciting but offers an equal opportunity for both the first-time buyer and the seasoned collector.

What exactly does “registration” mean? (back to top)

During registration you will receive, among other items, your Name Badge (which allows you access to all the events which you have registered), your Intent-to-Purchase booklet (which allows you to bid on the works of art) as well as information about the Sale and the bidding process.

What do I need to register? (back to top)

Usually all you will need to register is the name under which the tickets were purchased. We do suggest you bring your ticket confirmation letter/e-mail, in case there are any problems.

What times and where can I register? (back to top)

Registration will take place at the following time and location:

Friday, October 21
10am - 8pm
Phoenix Art Museum

Will I have many opportunities to meet the artists participating in The West Select? (back to top)

Although all the artists participating in The West Select would like to be in Phoenix for the weekend of the Sale, not all of their schedules will allow them to be here. Those artists who are in town will be at both the Awards Luncheon on Friday afternoon as well as the Sale on Friday evening. Also, we suggest attending Western ArtWalk in Downtown Scottsdale on Thursday evening. Many artists participating in The West Select are represented by galleries in Scottsdale and will be out and about on Thursday evening.

What is the weather typically like in October? (back to top)

Weather in Phoenix throughout October is known to be pleasant. Highs generally run near 88 degrees with lows falling to 60 degrees in the evening. Please note, that we are not weathermen and we suggest you check the weather prior to packing.

For complete information about Arizona’s weather, visit the National Weather Service or www.weather.com (The Weather Channel web site).

What is the attire for the weekend? (back to top)

Thursday, October 20 at Western ArtWalk - Attire is casual or western. As you will be walking quite a bit, we suggest comfortable walking shoes.

Friday, October 21: Sale Preview, Speakers Presentations and Awards Lunch at Phoenix Art Museum - Attire is casual.

Friday evening, October 21: The West Select Sale  – Attire is western chic for this festive evening.

To which events will transportation be provided? (back to top)

Transportation will be provided all day Friday evening between The Ritz Carlton and Phoenix Art Museum starting at 9:45am and running every 15-20 minutes until 10pm.

The bus pick-up and drop-off location at The Ritz-Carlton will be located on the northeast corner of the property. At Phoenix Art Museum, the busses will be loaded and unloaded at the main entrance located on the north side of the Museum.

What is the schedule for The West Select Sale on Friday evening, October 21? (back to top)

5:30pm - 8pm: The West Select Inaugural Sale, Phoenix Art Museum's Steele Gallery

EVENING TIMELINE:
5:30 - doors open
6pm  - 7pm - intent to purchase
7pm  - 1st drawing
7:20pm  - 2nd drawing

8 - 9pm - Coffee & Dessert

What time should I arrive at the Sale on Friday evening? (back to top)

If you have purchased your tickets in advance (which we HIGHLY recommend!) but were unable to register earlier in the day, we suggest arriving as close to 5:30 pm as possible. Although registration should only take a few minutes, you might encounter a short line.

If you have not purchased tickets in advance, please allow yourself up to 15 minutes to register.

What time does the Sale end? (back to top)

Although the second round of Intent-to-Purchase slips are drawn at 7:20pm, this does not mean that the Sale is technically over. Any works of art that are not sold are still available for purchase up until the end of the Exhibition on Sunday, November 20, 2011. In addition, the gallery will be open for post sales during Coffee & Dessert. We highly recommend taking another look around the Exhibition; maybe something will catch your eye!

Can I pay for my artwork with a credit card? (back to top)

YES. Credit cards as well as checks will be accepted.

When can I pick up my art? (back to top)

All art will remain on display at Phoenix Art Museum until the close of the Exhibition on Sunday, November 20, 2011. After sufficient time to dismantle and crate the individual art pieces, they will be shipped insured-collect to the buyer. Buyers of sculptures (other than the one on display) should contact the artist directly to make arrangements for delivery. Again, all works of art in The West Select Sale and Exhibition will remain on display at the Museum until Sunday, November 20, 2011.

May I attend The West Select Exhibition on Saturday or Sunday after the Sale? (back to top)

YES! We strongly encourage all attendees to visit Phoenix Art Museum as often as you would like. To see The West Select Exhibition during the weekend, all you will need is your official Name Badge. If you would like to see the Exhibition after the sale weekend you would need to purchase a general admission ticket which is $10 for adults. For more information on Phoenix Art Museum, please visit their web site at www.phxart.org.

What if I would like a special (i.e.: vegetarian meal) at the Awards Luncheon? (back to top)

If you require a special meal, please notify your server prior to meal service, they will be happy to accommodate you.

What is the Scottsdale Western ArtWalk? (back to top)

Scottsdale ArtWalk is much like a large, easy-going open house for the Scottsdale Arts District located primarily along Main Street and Marshall Way in Scottsdale Downtown. “America’s Original ArtWalk,” this weekly gathering takes place every Thursday evening (year-round, except Thanksgiving) between 7 and 9 pm. That’s when all member galleries belonging to the Scottsdale Gallery Association (SGA) open their doors to the public (FOR FREE) and show off the work of the Southwest’s outstanding artists.

A tradition for more than 30 years, the ArtWalk process is simple - proceed at your own pace, wander into galleries that capture your fancy, stroll around a delightful area punctuated by dramatic statues, bubbling fountains, tree-covered courtyards, famed restaurants and more. Horse-drawn carriage rides and trolley rides are often available from plentiful free parking areas nearby.

People love the fabulous weather and Scottsdale Downtown ambiance, and they often plan an entire evening that combines ArtWalk with a foray for drinks, dining or the theater.

Be prepared to be surprised by the wide array of artistic styles that are represented by Scottsdale galleries, from Western traditional to cutting-edge contemporary, from Southwest landscapes and Native American subjects to Russian Impressionism and more. Scottsdale ArtWalk keeps you on your cultural toes!

Scottsdale ArtWalk is also a great place to “people watch.” Sure, famed artists may be guests at individual gallery receptions, or even demonstrating their work, but the art-walking public itself offers up a wide slice of life, a mix of locals and tourists of all kinds.

Destination Information (back to top)

Planted firmly in the Salt River Valley, or Valley of the Sun, Phoenix, Arizona is surrounded by a series of stunning desert mountain ranges, including South Mountain Park, the largest metropolitan park on Earth. Called Hoozdo in the Navajo language, meaning "this place is hot," Phoenix, also has some of the highest seasonal temperatures anywhere in the world. Appropriately named from the mythological bird that rose from the smoldering ashes of it predecessors, Phoenix was first settled in 1867 by industrious farmers who brought forth the bounty of the fertile, but dry land via a canal from the nearby Salt River. Today's Phoenix is the pride of Arizona, and the fifth largest U.S. city by population. With its captivating desert surroundings, and nearly 300 days of warm weather each year enabling a variety of year round outdoor activities - from hiking and Jeep tours to horseback riding and hot air balloon adventures - Phoenix has become a perennial "hot-spot" for residents and tourists alike.

Can you recommend a good restaurant in Phoenix? (back to top)

We would recommend visiting The Stockyards, Arizona’s Original Steakhouse.

In 1947, The Stockyards, Arizona’s Original Steakhouse, opened its doors for the first time with a menu focused solely on its historical past: beef. Staying true to its heritage, The Stockyards’ menu continues to feature only the finest corn-fed, aged steaks and prime rib. With an emphasis on hearty flavors, The Stockyards' “New West Cuisine” embraces the culture and culinary trends of the Southwest, utilizing the freshest and highest quality indigenous ingredients in new and innovative ways. To date, The Stockyards remains a part of local history and a favorite gathering place for Arizonans.
